Learning FUN Ideas

Enjoy these activity ideas for lots of FUN learning:

Greater Than or Less Than: Give number pairs for students to find on the number line. Ask them to say or write greater than (>) or less than (<). Use these examples to model this helpful way of thinking:

  • +5 and +9: +5 is to the left of +9, so +5 < +9
  • 0 and +5: 0 is to the left of +5, so +5 > 0
  • -6 and -2: -6 is to the left of -2, so -6 < -2
  • -4 and -6: -6 is to the left of -4, so -4 > -6

Order Up: Ask students to order several integers, such as -8, +4, -5, +1, from least to greatest, locating the integers on the number line to help them. For fun with movement, hand students numbers written on cards and have them line up in order from lowest to highest.

Pattern Play: Display the 1-10 strip and put the 11-20 strip under it. Explain to your students that you are searching for patterns in the numbers. Tell them that you see repeating numerals in the numbers and ask for help identifying these patterns. (Patterns include repeating the ones numeral in every column, repeating the tens numeral in each row, and repeating the 1-9 pattern in each row. Now ask learners to predict the next number after 20, after 21, after 22, and so on up to 30. Write down the responses. Ask how they knew the numbers that would come next. Do they see the same patterns repeating? Put up the next strip to see if their predictions match.

Number Hunt: Assign or have students choose a number from the number line. Invite them to bring in that number of any object (pennies, toy cars, small blocks, etc.) to share with the class. For small group play, give them sets of items for them to count and match to the number line.
