Learning FUN Ideas

Enjoy these activity ideas for lots of U.S. money learning FUN:

    1. Money Matchup! For a simple matching game, place the ten bills pieces face down. Learners take turns flipping over two pieces, looking to match a front with a back. Got a match? Keep those pieces. No match? Flip them back over. Play moves to the next player. VARIATION: Spread the coins and bills out on a table. Have kids work individually or in teams to find matches of fronts and backs. For an extra challenge, ask them to find matches that include the front, back, and number and word labels.

    2. Play Store – Gather a variety of items – school supplies, canned goods, stuffed animals – and display them in a center or for all to see. Label each with a "price" that can be made with bills and coins from the U.S. Money Learning Set. Have kids take turns being the cashier and the shopper. The shopper selects an item, then pays with exact change from the Learning Set. The cashier checks the amount, asks for a correction if needed, and then they switch roles. BONUS: Shoppers pay with an amount other than exact change, and cashiers make change.

    3. Build an Ice Cream Cone – Cut a cone plus four or more ice-cream scoops out of paper for each participant. Write different monetary values on each of the scoops. Then, have kids select one cone plus at least four scoops to tape or glue to the top of their cone. After kids have placed all their scoops on the cones, have them each add up the amounts, using the U.S. Money Learning Set pieces for reference. Write the total cost of the ice cream on the cone! For extra practice, have kids use pieces from the set to show what bills and coins they'd need to pay for their cones.
