    Learning FUN Ideas

Have fun with these five activity ideas for learning about the planets:

      1. Hand a poster to eight students and ask them to line up in orbit order. For added fun, have them orbit or spin to demonstrate each planet’s rotation and show all the movement in the solar system.

      2. Start with reading a selection of facts from the posters. Challenge kids to find new facts that they find fascinating. Write these extra facts on note cards or accents and add them to your informational display.

      3. Everyone chooses a planet (besides Earth) and imagines they have been assigned to orbit this planet from a satellite space station. Use the facts on the posters to jump-start observations and write “official” astronaut reports about their findings.

      4. Help make the size and distance of planets relatable by comparing them to items and distances in everyday life. Ideas for comparisons might include football or soccer field lengths, distances from kids' homes to school, your city or state size, and so on. What other comparisons can students make?

      5. Give kids modeling clay or make homemade play dough in a variety of solar system-inspired colors. Recreate the planets using the play dough – remember to include surface features like valleys, craters, and so on.
