Ready for a challenge? Can you foster a culture of kindness in your learning space over the course of 30 days? We know you can! The concept is simple: just encourage acts of kindness over the course of 30 days (or a duration of your choice) and decide your method to track them. You decide if you’ll work toward a set number of acts of kindness or not.

In addition to the display idea, you’ll also see links to ways to track your acts of kindness, either through the FREE My Kindness Tracker, which is great for individuals, or the Editable Kindness Chain Digital Download, which can be used to list ways to be kind and shout-out others who are demonstrating kindness. At the end of your Kindness Challenge you can award those that were instrumental in creating real change in your community with our Kindness Recognition Awards and Certificates.

Directions
  1. Create Display: Add a background to your display, then add trim. We used the Vine Time Terrific Trimmers®. Next create your message. The Always Welcome Bulletin Board Set has buildable phrases and signs that coordinate well with the topic of kindness, such as “Spread Joy!”, “Bee a Friend”, and “Share Kindness”. We chose “Spread Joy!” for our display; use the messages that best suit your space. Using the Garden Path Tiles Ready Letters®, we created the phrase “30 Day Kindness Challenge” and added it to our display. Using pieces from the Rainbow Garden Bulletin Board Set, we finished off our display with a few decorative flowers, butterflies, and a birdhouse.
  2. Kindness Chain: If you choose to make a Kindness Chain with your display, we recommend keeping a container of cut-apart strips near your display for students to use throughout the challenge. Encourage each student to be on the lookout for acts of kindness and use the strips to shout-out their peers. The chain can also be used at the beginning of the challenge to brainstorm together what a kind classroom community looks like. At the end of the day/week, read aloud the acts of kindness. Then link each strip together and GROW a chain that reaches from wall to wall!
  3. Kindness Tracker: Tracking individual acts of kindness can be great for encouraging everyone to participate. If you choose to track individual acts of kindness, we recommend pairing the FREE downloadable resource with our Garden Friends superSpots® Stickers as they fit perfectly inside the center of the flowers.

30 ideas for ways to show kindness in the classroom:

  1. Say hello to each of your classmates
  2. Give a compliment to someone
  3. Invite someone new to sit with you at lunch
  4. Make a new friend at recess
  5. Leave a positive note for your classmate
  6. Help your classmate with a difficult assignment
  7. Include others in a game
  8. Hold a door open for someone
  9. Clean up around the school
  10. Thank a school employee
  11. Give out a kindness award
  12. Allow a friend to go first in a recess game
  13. Bring your bus driver a little treat
  14. Volunteer to help your teacher
  15. Gather assignments for a classmate who is absent
  16. Smile to those you pass in the hallway
  17. Say please and thank you when you ask for things
  18. Ask new people to be in your group during class
  19. Cheer on your classmates when they’ve done something well
  20. Share with others
  21. Leave a motivational message above the drinking fountain 
  22. Give someone a hug or high-five (if they want one)
  23. Let someone go ahead of you in line
  24. Tell the principal how great your teachers are
  25. Get to know someone at school that you’ve never talked to before
